Wayland casino to break ground Sept. 17

The Gun Lake Tribe has announced a September 17 groundbreaking date for Phase I of the Gun Lake Casino.

Phase I will be an 83,000 square-foot facility, approximately half the size of the initially planned project, which will cost $157 million. It will be located on 129th Avenue off U.S. 131 in Wayland Township.

"Given the current economic conditions, it makes sense for us to build this project in phases. This will allow us to bring jobs to our area sooner, and we look forward to planning and developing the next phase as the economy recovers," D.K. Sprague, tribal chairman, said in a statement.

The construction period for Phase I will last 10 to 12 months, as opposed to 16 to 18 months for the original project. The reduced construction timeline will bring badly needed jobs, economic activity and revenue sharing dollars to the local community much sooner, the statement continued.

"Even though we are starting with a smaller facility than we originally envisioned, it will still be a high-quality facility with excellent customer service in a warm and friendly environment," said Sprague.

The Gun Lake Casino will be operated by the tribe's management partner, MPM Enterprises, LLC, owned by an affiliate of Station Casinos, Inc. and private investors from Michigan.

"We are absolutely elated that good career opportunities for our tribal citizens and our friends and neighbors are finally within reach," said John Shagonaby, CEO of MBPI, Inc., the economic development arm of the tribe.
